The Packing List: What to Bring to Your Maternity Photo Shoot
Your maternity photo shoot isn’t just something to cross off your to-do list. It should be a genuinely beautiful and enjoyable experience, an opportunity for you to take time out of all your preparations and simply celebrate your pregnancy. I’ve been creating these special moments for moms-to-be for years and I can tell you first-hand that every session is better if you’re prepared. Here’s what to bring to your maternity photo session.
Necessities for Your Maternity Photography
First things first: you need to have the essentials for your portraits and you need to be comfortable. These are the high-priority items to bring to your session:
-
Outfits of your choice: It’s a good idea to bring one or two more outfits than you expect to need, if possible, so you can choose the outfits that best suit the session and have backups in case of an unexpected hiccup. Maternity gowns are perfect because they’re flexible enough to fit anyone and they give you a beautiful, flowing silhouette. P.S.: don’t forget to bring undergarments that are compatible with the outfits you choose!
-
Refreshments: No one wants to be hungry or thirsty during a photo shoot, and with all the work your body is doing to create your little one, that goes double for moms-to-be! Bring a stash of your favorite snacks and drinks.
-
Touch-up items: You could have your hair and makeup looking like perfection when your photo session starts but we all need touch-ups from time to time. Come prepared with makeup, extra hair pins, and anything else you may want for touch-ups between poses.
Niceties for Your Maternity Photography
Along with the essentials, there are several additions you can bring to your photo shoot to make your portraits even more special and unique. Consider bringing some of these fun items along:
-
Warm layers: For fall and winter maternity sessions, especially outdoors, it’s helpful to have one or two layering items like a shawl or wrap. Not only does this help you stay comfortable in the cold outdoors but it adds some fun texture to your portraits.
-
Sonogram pictures: Some parents love to incorporate their babies’ ultrasound pictures in their maternity photos, like a preview of what’s inside that lovely baby bump. Bring yours along if you want that option too!
-
Name display: Maternity photography is a great opportunity to announce the name you’ve chosen for your little one. You might choose to bring a plaque, chalkboard, or something else with your baby’s name written on it.
-
Special heirlooms: Some moms-to-be have family heirlooms that can be beautiful to incorporate into maternity portraits. That could include a family rosary, a hand-made blanket, or even your wedding veil.
